How to develop leadership skills…

Anyone can develop leadership skills, but it does take intention, focus, and work. Here are three key considerations when planning to develop your leadership skills:

skills-min
icon-1-min

You must have the drive to WANT to develop your leadership skills.

icon-2-min

Understand what leadership looks like to you. This helps you to identify the skills you should focus on. Our programs help you to do that by taking your through an “Optimal Leader” exercise.

icon-3-min

Find a program that best fits your needs. Things to consider:

a. Duration – Is the program long enough for you to get what you want out of it? Does it allow for self-reflection and application or is it a “drinking by the firehose” type of program?

b. Content – Are the topics covered timely and relevant?

c. Delivery – Are the method of delivery engaging to you and your preferred method of learning? Is it one-on-one or group settings? Think about how you engage best.

Why is leadership development important?

Based on their skills and approach, leaders can make a work environment motivating or they can make it unbearable. When they make a work environment motivating, they and the organization for which they work experience higher retention, improved morale, increased productivity, stronger customer service and satisfaction, a more positive culture, faster adoption to change, and better financial performance

Tips for Making the Most Out of Your Experience from Real Leaders

To get the most out of a leadership development program, keep in mind the following:

Frame 42-min

You get out of it what you put into it. If you’re making the investment, whether in time or money or both, immerse yourself fully into it. Giving it half of your attention will provide only half the value and knowledge. If the program is worth signing up for, it’s worth your undivided attention. It’s easy to think, “I’ll just go back later and read up more on it or do the exercises.” What are the chances that time will come? Typically, not very often. Commit – dive in – learn – practice. You will be so happy you did.

Frame 42-1-min

Make it a learning process, not an event. Understand that leadership development is a journey. It takes awareness and intention. It takes on different facets and _____. One evolves as they gain more experience and are open to varying perspectives.

Frame 42-2-min

Be willing to share and be vulnerable. We’re all human and have experienced challenges throughout our careers and lives.

Frame 42-3-min

Focus on whole-person growth. Effective leadership development not only enhances the performance of certain skills, but one’s whole self. Strong programs transform how one leads in every aspect of t heir life, not just in the workplace.

Frame 42-4-min

Prioritize self-reflection. You should learn a lot about yourself through a leadership development process. How you think affects how you feel. How you feel drives what actions you take. The actions you take garner the results you receive. By slowing down and being intentional with what kind of thoughts you are having and understanding why, and learning to better manage those thoughts, you can change how you’re showing up in the world, which creates life-changing insights and broader perspectives.

Frame 42-5-min

Build a Community of Support. Surrounding yourself with others whom you can share experiences and discuss challenges with can help the continuation of your development and help one to feel supported. The Confidence Track’s masterminds are created to offer such a community. Our mastermind programs bring professionals together to share insights, provide support, and create that peer community.

Here Are What Some of The Confidence Track’s Clients Have to Say

Mandi R.

“Lisa’s program not only increased my confidence and my assertiveness, but also my overall comfort level and authenticity within the workplace. If you are looking to improve your leadership, confidence, and silence your personal doubts, this is a great program to consider!”

Brooke B.

“Lisa Hinz has created a very solid, collaborative program that has affected my career path in a big way. The modules were pertinent to my position and the knowledge could be immediately applied. My "take-aways" were identifying my core values, identifying my personal saboteurs, and how my Energy Leadership Index (ELI) changes in response to stress. It has also been helpful for me to identify my own leadership style, communication style, and methods that will help me combat my personal roadblocks and achieve success.

This program gave me the confidence to apply for a master's degree program, ask for a promotion from my boss, and volunteer for company outreach events - all of which have produced positive outcomes. I highly recommend this program to anyone looking for a deep dive into how they can perpetuate their "best self" in both personal and corporate spaces.”

Kelly C.

"The Elevating Career Confidence program transformed my professional trajectory at a pivotal time in my career. I began the 12-week program during a transition into a new manager role in a new-to-me Fortune 500 company. It was the perfect time to take a step back and break open the patterns and habits that impeded my confidence and ability to thrive in my relationships and work.

Lisa's coaching in our 1:1 sessions helped me reflect on how to transform my thinking, habits, and approach to bring about positive, productive leadership energy.

Thank you Lisa for helping me break open my self-confidence, the leadership superpower!"

How to Stay Motivated During the Program and Afterward

Check in with yourself to see what new knowledge and insights you have gained as you go through a program. If you have stronger awareness that makes you stop and think about things that you had not before, this means you are learning! This awareness can drive motivation throughout a program.

Having and embracing a growth mindset can motivate one to continue to reach higher levels of awareness.

To stay motivated after our programs, keep the materials you receive on hand. Keep them visible, so they serve as a reminder to revisit the exercises and tools they provide so that you retain what you gained throughout the program. If you developed a network of professionals throughout the program, reach out and stay in touch with them. Having an ongoing support system in place is great for holding us (and each other) accountable.

Reasons why leadership development programs fail is because…

There are many reasons why a leadership development program might fail. Keep these in mind whether you are involved with creating one internally to your company, attending one internally or attending one externally.

Lack of commitment or priority of attendee(s).

Training topics are irrelevant or too narrow.

Failure to practice real-life scenarios.

Lack of executive or organizational support.

Steps to help you develop your leadership style:

Identifying your strengths and weaknesses

Tuning into your authentic self

Being aware of biases (about yourself and about others)

Common Challenges Faced by Female Leaders and How to Overcome Them

Women leaders can face many challenges throughout their careers. This is not to say that men can’t, because they can face any of these as well. However, our focus is on what women often face, that can become roadblocks to success.

Lack of Confidence. There will always be naysayers and situations that make you question your worth, whether you can accomplish something or not, or if you deserve to be where you are.

Not Speaking Up. Undesirable prior experiences or lack of confidence can prevent one from speaking up, sharing ideas, and voicing opinions.

Taking a Back Seat. Imagine walking into a conference room – there are seats available at the conference table and seats available against the walls. If you choose the seat against the wall, taking a back seat is a challenge to work on overcoming.

Too apologetic. Saying sorry too often can diminish one’s impact as a leader. People often apologize when there is nothing to apologize for. It can be considered “weak speak” when overused.

Being spoken over or interrupted. Allowing others to constantly speak over you or interrupt you before you are finished talking.

Unconscious Gender and Age Bias. We can often be bias of ourselves and also deal with biases from others, often without even realizing it.

Lacking support from other women. Studies show that women who support women are more successful in business. Research in the Harvard Business Review says women who have an inner circle of close female contacts are more likely to land executive positions with greater authority and higher pay.

Own your success. It can be easy to give everyone and everything else credit for the success that you’ve worked hard to achieve.

Imposter Syndrome. A false and sometimes crippling belief that one’s successes are due to luck or fraud, can affect up to 82% of people.

Communication – Understand the difference between being assertive vs. being abrasive. Nonjudgmental vs judgmental. Succinct vs. too in-the-weeds. Work on eliminating up speak, which weakens the power of your voice and brand.

Lack of sponsorship or mentors. Many male executives have mentors providing such support, but research from the Harvard Business Review indicates women are less likely to obtain sponsorship. Female employees are not as likely to organically meet sponsors, and they often don’t know what steps to take to seek the full sponsorship they need.

How to Overcome Challenges faced by Female Leaders:

  • Invest in Your Development

Invest in your development. Your development and education are something that no one can take away from you. Think about that.

  • Find the Right Development

Finding a program that focuses on areas that are relevant to the skills you want to improve upon is key.

  • Practice Your Skills

Professional development isn’t a one and done thing. Take what you learn and apply it in your real-world situations. Skills need to be learned and practiced.

  • Prioritize Self-care

Cut yourself some slack. We’re all human and no one is perfect. Self-compassion is important to practice regularly.

  • Adapt a Growth Mindset

Know that you are always learning and growing. Always. There is no time limit on education and new experiences.

  • Be an Ally and Advocate for Your Female Colleagues

Get out of your comfort zone. It’s hard to grow by always playing it safe and sticking with only what you know. You’ll be amazed at how much your courage will blossom.

  • Embrace BRAVE

    · Be understanding and empathetic to others who may be facing similar challenges. Share what you have learned with them to help them learn and grow. Be an example of what is possible.

Assessments and Coaching Packages for Women offered after the Leadership Development Program

Beyond our leadership development programs or on their own, we offer attitudinal assessments as well as one-on-one coaching packages. These options allow you to continue with your leadership development journey for maximum impact.

The Confidence Track Offers Attitudinal Assessments:

energy-debrief-min

The ELI Assessment is an attitudinal assessment tool that captures how an individual currently perceives and approaches work and life. This means that you learn to make change happen in real time when you encounter a moment of self-doubt, fear, or frustration. Along with the assessment, you will receive a 60- to 90-minute one-on-one debrief of your results.

The ELI Assessment is an attitudinal assessment tool that captures how an individual currently perceives and approaches work and life. This means that you learn to make change happen in real time when you encounter a moment of self-doubt, fear, or frustration.

This assessment on its own is extremely powerful - but when you add the 360 option to it, it allows you to see how you're perceived by those you work with. When you want to grow as a leader, a 360 allows you to see which areas you may need to further develop.

For the 360, you can choose up to 25 people who will rate you on 36 leadership competencies.
Once all results are finalized, you will receive a 90- to 120- minute one-on-one debrief of your own assessment results as well as the 360 feedback.
